Based on available information, researchers believe that the virus can spread from people to animals in some situations. Until there is more information about how the virus affects animals, you should avoid limit contact with your pets or animals if you have or think you have COVID-19. Avoid petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked, sharing food, and sleeping in the same bed as your pet. If you’re sick, try to have another family member take care of your pet. Otherwise, be sure to wash your hands and wear a face covering while interacting with your pet, their food, waste, or supplies. If you are sick and your dog becomes sick, do not take your pet to the veterinarian yourself. Call your veterinarian and let them know you have the virus. Some veterinarians offer telemedicine consultations and can help you determine the next step for your pet’s treatment and care.
