Cases of reinfection have been reported but are rare. Reinfection occurs when a person gets sick, recovers, and then later becomes infected again. The CDC is still investigating reinfection. Some reinfections are expected with COVID-19. Variants, such as Delta, may also cause a person to become reinfected with COVID-19. The most important steps you can take to prevent reinfection include:
- Get the COVID-19 vaccine
- Follow social distancing and mask guidance from your local and state health departments
- Avoid crowds and indoor spaces that are not well ventilated
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, and use hand sanitizer when soap is not available
